SONICA is an acoustic duo consisting of Philippa Loveday and Darren Hulcombe. There are no backing tracks, just stripped-down acoustic covers with a strong focus on harmonies. From Elvis Presley to Queen, Eurythmics to Outkast, SONICA’S easy-going take on classic hits is a perfect choice for your event or celebration.
Philippa has been a lead vocalist for over ten years and has fronted many Melbourne coverbands including Matt Bradshaw & G-Force, The Wow City Movement and Australia’s Greatest 80s Tribute Show, Stand and Deliver. Philippa spent many years as lead vocalist for both Princess Cruises and Dracula’s Cabaret and has also lent her voice to numerous radio advertisements. With a unique voice at ease singing anything from smooth jazz to rock, Philippa is a truly versatile vocalist.
“Special mention to performer Philippa whose strong vocals come to the fore in a simmering burlesque performance of Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’ that held the audience spellbound for its entire duration”. Bradley Storer – Theatre Press
Although percussion is Darren’s forté, he plays multiple instruments including guitar and keyboard. He has performed with many international acts including The Drifters, The Platters and various magicians, circus artists and illusionists. Darren has played percussion with the idols of the 80s: Pseudo Echo, Boom Crash Opera, Real Life and Chantoozies and was also Musical Director at Dracula’s Cabaret. Darren was a featured artist in Australia’s number one drum magazine, DRUMscene, where he was described as “…arguably one of the most successful and adventurous drummers/multi-instrumentalists in the country”. Behind the scenes, Darren is an accomplished music producer whose clients include the BBC, Aēsop and critically acclaimed members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
SONICA’S extensive musical and performing experience makes them the perfect ‘sound’ for your next event or celebration.
